On August 30th, Still Remains opened to the public at Picture It Framed in Apollo Beach — David Mac's first exhibition, and the first time this body of work has been shown as a collection rather than one piece at a time.
The gallery filled early and stayed that way through the afternoon. Neighbors, collectors, and plenty of first-time visitors moved through the space together, many seeing gyotaku up close for the first time — the scales, the ink, the direct impression of an actual fish rather than a photograph or illustration of one.
Several pieces sold before the day was over, going home with people who walked in as strangers and left having a piece of the story this work is telling. For a first show, that's about as good a response as anyone could ask for.
This is the first exhibition of what's planned to be an ongoing series, not a one-time event. A second show is already being discussed, building on everything learned from this one.
