The Process
David can print the fish dockside or take the specimen back to the studio, depending on the fish, location, and type of finished work desired.
Each specimen is prepared and printed by hand using traditional direct gyotaku techniques. Multiple impressions may be made during the process so David can select the strongest examples for the finished commission. The client receives the selected impression or impressions, and David will not retain, display, reproduce, or offer impressions from a client's fish for sale without their permission.
On Location
For certain commissions, David can meet the client at the dock, marina, or another suitable location and create the impressions while the catch is still fresh.
This option keeps the entire process connected to the day and place the fish was caught and allows the client to experience the printing process firsthand.
In Studio
For clients who want the most controlled result, David can take the fish back to the studio. This provides the time and working conditions necessary to carefully prepare and position the specimen, control the application of ink, and create multiple impressions without rushing the process.
After printing is complete, David will clean and fillet the fish, vacuum-seal the fillets, and freeze them for the client. The artwork preserves the impression of the catch while the fish itself is handled with the same care from water to table.
The Result
Once the strongest impression or impressions have been selected, the artwork can be professionally mounted, stretched, and/or framed depending on the medium, composition, and client's preference.
Professional framing can be coordinated through Picture It Framed in Apollo Beach, Florida, or the finished impression can be provided to the client unframed.
The result is not a reproduction or illustration of the fish. It is a direct impression made from the actual specimen itself.
The fish is temporary. The impression remains.
